Academy of music selects winners

Thirty-one young musicians performed for scholarships at the annual Powell River Academy of Music Scholarship Competition recently.

The academy holds the competition for pianists, vocalists and instrumentalists studying at the facility. Scholarship money, generously donated by patrons and teachers, assists students in their future studies.

The following students gave excellent performances and received scholarships:

Piano performers included James Leishman, Erin Ramsay, Griffin Leach, Aaron Schweitzer, Alana Kondra, Austyn Leach, Owen Jantz, Aidan de Villiers, Annika Harry, Willemijn Poelen, Hannah Schweitzer, Jing Zhong and Taiga Ball.

Scholarship recipient for the Marjorie Henry Scholarship, awarded to musicians 12 years and under, was Willemijn. Annika was runner-up.

Scholarship recipient for the Lillian Dickson Memorial Scholarship, awarded to musicians 13 to 18 years, was Jing. Taiga was runner-up.

Vocal performers included Isabella Colasanto, Chelsea Riddle, Haedyn Drosdovech, Sarah Schweitzer, Tyler Riddle, Ben Collings, Hannah Schweitzer, Saverio Colasanto, Payton Bradley, Ciara Maguire, Jeremy Hopper and Ben Kyle.

Scholarship recipient for the Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hibberd Scholarship, awarded to musicians 12 years and under, was Hannah. Ben Collings was runner-up. Scholarship recipient for the Don James Scholarship, awarded to musicians 13 to 18 years, was Ben Kyle.

Instrumental performers included Rafael Reghelin, Nicolas Colasanto, Ying Zhong, Cody Johanson, Joseph Vautour and Taku Ball.

Scholarship recipient for the Mr. and Mrs. Derry Simpson Scholarship, awarded to musicians 12 years and under, was Ying.

Scholarship recipient for the Carriere Scholarship, awarded to musicians 13 to 18 years, was Joseph.
