Acceptance holds true

A large assortment of mixed media, from beeswax to buttons, will be on display throughout April in an art show by Giovanni Spezzacatena.

Recent works by the local artist comprise a 50-piece collection. Throughout, Spezzacatena has kept a light touch with a collage aesthetic navigating between comic art, abstract, science fiction/fantasy and nearly everything in between.

An element of the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic of which Shoganai (an acceptance of things passing and beyond one’s control) is just one aspect that is represented in this, his first large scale one-person show in BC. His work displays colour, texture, and curvilinear form keeping one hand in representation, while not being ruled by it.

Spezzacatena (also known as Rabideye) gained a bachelor of fine arts and a master of fine arts degree from Concordia University’s film production and animation programmes in 1992 and 1997. He is a Powell River resident of Italian origin, born in Montreal.

His show will be displayed from April 3 through 29 and is launched with a reception from 7 to 9 pm Thursday, August 3, in the foyer at Vancouver Island University. Live links are available online.
