Alt rocker hopeful in national music competition

Musician looks for communitys votes during first round

A Powell River artist and musician who boasts having the world’s longest tongue is in the running for CBC’s annual musical talent search.

Rick Sazon entered Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Searchlight competition, a contest that allows listeners to vote on which artists and songs they like. Voting for the first round, through which finalists from each of the country’s regions will be chosen, opened on March 30, and will close at 11:59 pm, Monday, April 13.

Sazon’s alt rock song “The Unmaiden’s Dream” can be found on the CBC contest website as well as a couple of other tunes including a version of the song with only vocals and piano. The mixed version is the song that is entered in the contest, he said.

“The music and the lyrics were written by me,” he added. “Vocals were by Zoe Pelton and the song was produced by Tom Dowding and me in The Music Room.” Chris King played lead guitar on the track.

The grand prize is $20,000 in gear from Yamaha Canada Music and a gig at the CBC Music Festival in Toronto.

The competition aims to provide exposure to new fans and a chance to find sponsors, shows and other resources, including record deals.

Readers interested in listening to Sazon’s song or participating in the contest’s voting can go to the contest website.
