Ambassadors promote art

Venture takes artists down the coast

A group of 20 Powell River artists are heading south this Fall in the hopes of promoting local art. Known as Malaspina Artists, they hatched the plan to take their art on the road after noting dwindling numbers of off-season studio visitors.

“Instead of expecting people to come here, we are taking our art to them,” said organizer and artist Ursula Medley.

Calling themselves Powell River Art Ambassadors, the creative collective’s first road trip will take the group to this year’s Sunshine Coast Art Crawl on October 16 to 18 in Roberts Creek.

“It will be a chance for local artists to promote how strong the visual arts are here in Powell River,” said Medley.

The decision to take their art to the crawl means there are no crawl venues further north than Earls Cove this year.

According to painter Alfred Muma, prior to planning the road trip, many Powell River artists thought they would not be participating in this year’s crawl.

“There were concerns about including Powell River in the tour this year because of low turnout here in previous years,” said Muma, “so this was arranged as a way for us to attend.”

Based on the success of this first trip, Muma said the artists could take their art to additional festivals, such as next summer’s Filberg Festival in Comox.
