Art exhibit draws upon madness

During the month of March local artist Paul Paiero will display a collection of paintings he calls “We have nothing to do but wait.”

Paiero spent his early years in Toronto, and that is where the “Art Madness” hit him. His aunt Armida once referred to him as “the boy who draws ugly things.” He left Ontario to take a Bob Ross painting class near Quesnel. It was very influential in the direction his creations took. Everything from balloons, plywood, body filler, to metal and concrete were used to create his projects that he refers to as having a “dark” flavour. It was while living in Fort St. John that he began to use acrylic paint and real canvas.

“Most of the darkness has passed now that I am living in Powell River,” he said, “and so the subject matter has changed as well over time. A new medium might be in order soon, as I need something else to play with.”

The show will hang for the entire month of March at Malaspina Exhibition Centre in the foyer of Vancouver Island University Powell River campus. An opening reception from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, March 5, at VIU will be an opportunity to meet Paiero, a “sometime fisherman, once upon a time hunter, and occasional artist.”
