Art exposes creativity of expression

Annual exhibition back for a weekend of erotica

What started as just a Saturday afternoon of displaying erotic art has become an annual three-day event of music, crafts and interaction with artists.

Caitlin Bryant started Expose Yourself as an art show for local artists and staged it in the Rodmay Heritage Hotel. It has become an annual event for the third weekend in March.

“I was sitting in bed on a rainy Sunday morning reading the Georgia Straight and I was looking through the entertainment section. I saw an ad for an erotica spoken word event and thought ‘That is really cool.’ We have so many artists in town. So I thought why don’t we just do it?”

Once again, the exhibition will take over the Rodmay. The Rainbow Room, lobby and executive suite will be exposed to erotic art from about 25 local and out-of-town artists. Bryant said there are about 30 or 40 contributors including performers.

“Coming from Vancouver Island is Emily Spiller,” she said. “This is really exciting. Emily won Best Female Vocalist from the Vancouver Island music awards last year.”

Expose Yourself will run from March 16 to 18. Bryant said a show like this benefits the artists who don’t often get to show erotic pieces.

“Because there’s not a lot of venues to show sensitive material we get a lot of people who have done one or two pieces or this is something they did 15 years ago that they’ve just had in their private collections. We like to leave room to have a nice mix of mediums.”

This year’s exhibition has a new addition, Bryant said. “We have a workshop this year, an artistic nude seminar with Steven Grover. We have a few spaces left for this. It’s $35 per person. Steven is a really experienced professional photographer who’s just new to town in the last few years.”

Joining Grover will be model Jen Roth from Vancouver. They will discuss photography, agencies, modelling and placing photography with agencies.

Weekend tickets for the event are $20 per person and available at Ecossentials, Creative Rift Studio and Gallery and at the door. Expose Yourself starts at 7 pm on March 16 at the hotel.
