Artist Wendy Brown will show her work in the foyer of Vancouver Island University Powell River campus during the month of December.
Brown is a full-time artist and writer living in Powell River. She studied fine art at Ontario College of Art in Toronto. She has worked as an art director in publishing and advertising, as an illustrator, editorial cartoonist and as a teacher.
This show, entitled Home, is a celebration of her 20 years as an artist on the West Coast. The group of acrylic and pastel works are a notated, chronological exploration of the work she did when she arrived here from downtown Toronto, up to and including the work she is doing now.
She has had numerous solo and group shows in Ontario and in BC. Her work hangs in private collections across Canada and abroad, and can be found in Artique Artists’ Cooperative gallery in Powell River and Tug-Guhm Gallery in Lund.
Brown hopes people will find her show to be an interesting journey, just as she has, because the West Coast is finally home to her. Perhaps because she spent the first part of her life in the city it was easy to ignore the natural world and focus on the figure and urban surroundings. Now that she is surrounded by the natural beauty of the West Coast she feels ready to acknowledge it on canvas.
She is currently painting everyday wonders—random clusters of branches, shells, rocks as they are thrown together by natural forces. They are large paintings of small accidental beauty that might escape general notice.
An opening reception will be held from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, December 5 at the university and everyone is welcome to attend. The show will be displayed from December 4 to January 6.
