As a guest visiting artist, world-class painter Landon Mackenzie will inspire current and future artists with a public talk Friday, June 13, while in Powell River for a three-day workshop.
The Powell River Artist in Residence Project is supported by Malaspina Art Society, Powell River Arts Council, Powell River Community Foundation and Powell River Voices. Together, they are bringing Mackenzie to Powell River where she will share her perspective on finding routes to experimentation and awareness of one’s practice. Participants in the sold out workshop will have their work critiqued and then have space to create on site during the weekend.
Her visit coincides with Converging Visions: Listening, Learning, Understanding, being held 1 to 4 pm Saturday, June 14 at the Salish Centre, Tla’amin Nation. Mackenzie will be in attendance and artists are encouraged to bring artwork focused on the subject of “place” to the event about building bridges between Tla’amin and Powell River.
As part of her visit to Powell River, Mackenzie will provide an artist’s talk, open to the public, at 7 pm on Friday, June 13 at Powell River Academy of Music.
Mackenzie is the first full professor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She has influenced students over 30 years through her role as guest artist in residency projects in Canadian and international art departments.
She is the recipient of the first Ian Wallace award for excellence in teaching, and received both the golden and diamond jubilee Queen Elizabeth II medals for her contribution to culture in Canada.
Her paintings are held in many collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Her works on paper and large format canvases have been shown in over 90 exhibitions in Canada and internationally.
In the fall, Mackenzie will present a two-person show with the artist Emily Carr at Vancouver Art Gallery. Some of her work in that collection could be influenced by her time in Powell River.
The public talk on Friday is free and everyone is invited to attend.
