Eleven artists who live and create south of town will be holding their own mini-studio tour Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24.
This is the first time the group has gathered to host the tour which involves four locations between Zilinsky Road and Phillips Road.
“We’re calling ourselves the Southern Belles,” said painter Lee Mackenzie. “And we decided to describe it as an ‘Art Hop’ because we want it to be a fun day for visitors to come and check out our studios and our works.”
Painters Ursula Medley, Maggie Poole and Mackenzie will be opening their studios at their home locations. Potter Brenda Neall will be at her workshop and showroom. Jeweller Karin Birch and a collection of artists who call themselves “Mud In The Stix” will also be at Medley’s studio. The “Mud In The Stix” group includes Lee Bailey, Collene Crain, Pat Dixon, Laurie Lee, Lenora Sattmann and Sally Steele. Their works include clay art, beadwork and assemblage.
The artists will be at their locations from 11 am to 4 pm each day. Signs on the highway will direct visitors to the studios.
“I love welcoming people to my workspace,” said Neall. “And I find they are always curious about the process of working in clay, and what kind of materials and glazes I use.”
Poole agrees. “I like it when people bring children into the studio. Maybe it will inspire them to become artists one day.”
Art Hop cards with artist and address details are available at Artique Artists Cooperative and Creative Rift galleries on Marine Avenue. Balloons on signs along the highway will direct visitors to studio locations.
