Dr. Adela Torchia has discovered how to live a joyful life while consuming less. She is the author of a newly released book called Gandhi, Ecology and World Religions.

Torchia is rector of St David and St Paul Anglican Church in Townsite. She completed her PhD in religious studies at the University of Manitoba in 1996, recently retired from the faculty of Athabasca University and arrived in Powell River four years ago.

The book is published by Lambert Academic Publishing with a foreword written by Klaus K. Klostermaier. Klostermaier is a Sanskrit and Hindu scholar, who was head of the department of religion at University of Manitoba while Torchia was a student.

The publisher’s description on the back cover of the book reads, “This book deals with a Gandhian ethics of economics which helps us to re-engage the religion and ecology debate, and to re-envision ecology’s more-with-less philosophy as an invitation to liberation rather than deprivation.”

Torchia will launch her book from 4 to 6 pm on Thursday, March 21 at Vancouver Island University’s Powell River campus. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Any reader interested or aware of the links between world religions and environmental concerns will likely find this talk of interest. Following the presentation, questions and discussion will be welcome.
