Society recognizes scope of genealogical research
Author receives honourable mention for history

A local author has received an honourable mention from BC Genealogical Society for her historical account of Texada Island.

Heather Harbord received the mention for her book Texada Tapestry: A History published by Harbour Publishing in Madeira Park.

The society announced its Family History Book Award for 2011 with two honourable mentions and overall winner Ray Phillips for The Little Green Valley.

This is the second honourable mention for Harbord regarding her Texada book. The first was earlier this spring through the BC Historical Federation’s competition for historical writing.

Harbord is surprised at the attention her book is receiving. “That is kind of nice; it is amazing actually,” she said. “I am not an experienced genealogical researcher, I just asked other people how to do it.” She did all of the research herself over a three-year span, including many trips to the island.

Harbord, who is the author of five books relating to the local area, will be attending the award presentation event mid-month.
