Two performers from last summer’s Sunshine Music Festival are returning to Powell River this weekend.
Vocalist of the Year at the 2014 Vancouver Island Music Awards, Brodie Dawson recently made it to the top 10 in this region during CBC Radio’s Searchlight contest The Hunt for Canada’s Best New Artist.
Dawson calls her style “a mix of soulful folky blues with gospel funk, a twist of pop and a twang of old-school country.”
Starting on Vancouver Island, the musician has lived in Montreal and Yellowknife and now calls Cumberland home. She has shared the stage with WiF, Annie Becker, Rick Fines and Serena Ryder among others.
Dawson has also performed with Stuart McLean and The Vinyl Café.
Joining Dawson for the Powell River show is singer/songwriter Tracey Riley, who plays acoustic guitar, harmonica, hand drums and bass.
A resident of Yellowknife, Riley has performed at festivals and concerts across Canada and the United State. She has opened for Crash Test Dummies, The Rankin Family and April Wine and has performed with many entertainers including k.d. lang, Valdy, Rita McNeil, Odetta and Ferron.
The two women, whose tour last fall included Vancouver Island and the BC Interior, will be performing on Friday, May 16, at Tree Frog Bistro, 4603 Marine Avenue. Doors open at 7:30 pm and their show begins at 8 pm. For advance tickets, readers can call 604.485.0010.
