Banff festival screens outdoor adventures

Snow and mountain sports buffs get their annual fix

When the Banff Mountain Film Festival comes to Powell River next month, filmgoers can expect the very best in mountain adventure, cultural and environment films.

The festival screens on Friday, January 11, and Saturday, January 12, at Max Cameron Theatre, Brooks Secondary School. Doors open at 6 pm. A reception will be held before the screening with complimentary appetizers. Culinary arts students will serve hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be open with soft drinks also available. This year a raffle draw and a silent auction will be held for fishing trips, electronics and outdoor gear. Door prizes will be given away after the festival’s intermission.

Each night will have a separate program, but both will bring a diverse and exciting line up to the big screen. Eight or nine films will be shown at each screening.

The films selected for this year’s presentations include several award winners including the outstanding Crossing the Ice which hauled in three awards: Grand Prize, People’s Choice Award and Best Film, Exploration and Adventure.

“The proceeds are going back into the school to help our youth,” said Jim Palm, local organizer.

In the past, outdoor and athletics programs at Brooks have been supported by the proceeds along with expenses for a wide variety of purchases like canoes and kayaks, paying for travel and certification fees and buying school uniforms for athletes.

This year, festival organizers are including a drop box for outdoor gear and asking the public to give any gear that’s not being used to the outdoor program for students.

Tickets are $20 each night and can be purchased at Taw’s Cycle and Sports, Alpha Adventures-Outdoor Adventure Store, River City Coffee and Thunder Bay Store.
