Change can be good

Taking it to the next level

After eight years, Powell River Writers Conference (PRWC) is taking a one-year hiatus. When executive members met at the organization’s recent annual general meeting, the future of the conference seemed dim. However, due to a group of creative thinkers, it is simply taking a break to reinvent itself.

Barb Rees retired as president and head organizer and Dave Rees retired from the treasurer position. “It was my pleasure to found it, and serve for these eight years,” said Barb. “I know my writing has benefited greatly from all the professionals who’ve attended, plus I’ve made a ton of writer friends.” The new board consists of Jennifer Salisbury as president, Donna Koleszar as vice-president, Treasurer Heidi Sullivan, Secretary Gwen Enquist, plus Barb Rees, Bud Gilham and Hannah Main Van-der Kamp.

In the interim, the new board is actively seeking a partner organization or festival to work with. More hands make lighter work and make for bigger exposure and contacts. PRWC will apply for grants to hire an event organizer. The whole layout of the conference may be restructured.

Many comments have been made over the years from writers saying how much they enjoyed the intimacy of a small event where they have ample opportunity to talk with the presenters and others.

Should the conference grow, or stay at its current size? What aspects of the conference should stay? What could change? Organizers of the 2013 PRWC are looking for ideas and feedback. Correspondence can be sent to Salisbury at jennifer@platinumbusinessdevelopment.com.
