Children join in Canada-wide event

VIDEO   – School children from across Canada have joined in song for Music Monday for the past 10 years. This year on the first Monday in May, choirs from James Thomson, Henderson, Kelly Creek and Edgehill elementary schools sang at Willingdon Beach within the Rotary Pavilion.

“We’ve done this before but just at the different schools,” explained Joanne Hansen, a School District 47 music teacher.

She and Jackie Boersma, another district music teacher, decided to join their choirs together to perform outdoors. “We had about 80 children in total,” Hansen said.

She added that Westview Elementary and Brooks Secondary schools also participated at their premises.

This year’s selection was “Is Somebody Singing” with music by Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies and lyrics by Robertson and astronaut Chris Hadfield.

It is anticipated that more than 400,000 youngsters and volunteers registered to participate in the 2014 event. It is sponsored by CBCMusic.ca and The Coalition for Music Education to celebrate music education in schools across Canada.
