Classes help reach potential

Alexander Technique removes anxiety from performing and life
Classes help reach potential

Mental and physical stress can greatly diminish performance and get in the way of improvement, but there is a technique that may offer some help.

Part of Performing Arts BC Provincial Festival is a number of workshops that demonstrate how using the Alexander Technique can improve performance.

“I encourage people to come and find out how this technique can help you remove the stress, strain and anxiety from what you love to do,” said performance coach Emma Jarrett, “leaving you free to reach even more of your potential.”

She added she is not teaching anyone what to do within their discipline as that is the job of teachers and adjudicators. “I help participants bring a different mindset and body awareness to how they perform so they can learn most effectively and faster.”

Her classes are open to competitors, observers, parents, volunteers and anyone who may be interested.

“What I talk about are general principles that apply to all of life,” Jarrett explained. “We think about things and move in ways that are not always helpful. This technique gives you the opportunity to change some habits of a lifetime and free yourself up so you can enjoy what you do with more comfort, stamina and freedom from strain.”

Sessions will be held at Living Water Foursquare Church hall, 4640 Manson Avenue.

One-hour introductory classes in an interactive group setting are scheduled for 1 pm or 7:45 pm Wednesday, May 27; 10 am Thursday, May 28, and 1 pm Friday, May 29. Sessions specifically for dancers will be held at 6:30 pm Wednesday, May 27 or Thursday, May 28.

People can sign up at the festival registration desk, in the upper foyer of Powell River Recreation Complex, open from noon until 9 pm on Tuesday, May 26.

Fees are $10 per person and can be paid at registration or at the door before classes begin.

“For more personal instruction, I offer small group and private sessions,” said Jarrett. “Times are available through the week to suit your schedule and at reduced rates for the festival.”

A one-hour class in small groups of three or four is $20 per person or $40 for half-hour private sessions.

Jarrett is coming to Powell River to be of service to anyone who would like a little assistance in getting better at what they do and in solving problems that might be getting in their way. “The hour-long introductions are open to the public so you can find out more and see the principles in action this might get you started on a fresh new track of doing the things that you love.”

Jarrett has been helping performers for many years. People who have taken her courses praise her work.

“Working with Emma Jarrett was like a guided tour of my body while I was playing,” wrote Oliver Swain. “She made very subtle observations and adjustments and communicated clearly. A wonderful and transformative experience. And since working with Emma, my challenges with tendonitis and fatigue have improved dramatically.”

Actor Michael Bean said, “Emma is a gifted instructor. I had heard of Alexander Technique for years, but it was studying with Emma that finally helped me experience the deep simplicity of the work and the profound impact that it can have on my acting.”
