Local artist CATNIP will display a mix of new artwork, old cartoony pals, and paintings from the past year during the month of January at Malaspina Art Society’s exhibition space.

This show promises to be fun and colourful. CATNIP grew up in Powell River and has been doodling since he was young. His choice of medium ranges from spray cans, acrylic, oil, pastels to just about anything he can get his hands on to create a piece.

This is his first solo show. He has worked on many live painting events for local music shows and most recently he painted the backdrop for the Nutcracker play. He also worked on a joint show called “Dream Scapes” at the Aurora Innovative Arts festival in Townsite this past summer.

His work can be seen along Willingdon South free wall, which is always changing, and there are a few “seedlings” scattered around town in semi-secret places that are like a surprise when discovered.

CATNIP describes his work as “a creative need to express windows of alternate realities within this place of existence to incorporate other worlds and universes into ours, for the purpose of reflecting our infinite possibilities from the land of imagination.”

He helped to start, and is currently helping to run, a store on Marine Avenue called Kaleidoscope, which is a collective of local artists.

This show will run from January 8 until February 10 in the foyer of Vancouver Island University. An opening reception will take place in the evening of Thursday, January 8. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy music, refreshments and to meet this innovative young artist.
