Duo opens concert series

Powell River Academy of Music starts its 2014/15 concert series by welcoming back Juno-award winner Duo Concertante.

Violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves have devoted more than 15 years to the duo repertoire, and impressed an appreciative Powell River audience three years ago with their evocative and seamless performance. The Thursday, October 9, concert will feature Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Kreutzer” Sonata, from which the duo took their name. Its inscription, “in stilo molto concertante,” implies the performers are two equal and dynamic voices, and Dahn and Steeves certainly live up to the billing.

November brings “music of the Americas” with Celso Machado, Canadian Folk Music Awards’ World Solo Artist of the Year in 2008. Classically trained on guitar, Machado pushes his instrument to new heights and involves his voice and entire body to add a percussive beat. He will be joined by Academy Chamber Choir as they explore a different rhythmic mood, performing selections from Brazil, Cuba, Venezuela, and an Argentinian tango on November 3.

Lorraine Min, piano, performs in November, and Don Thompson returns to town with Ensemble Vivant to join the Academy Chamber Choir in the new year. Audiences can enjoy a Powell River first as organist Edward Norman brings to life the classic 1925 Lon Chaney silent movie The Phantom of the Opera on the big screen in James Hall at the Academy.

Tickets are now on sale for the Academy’s seven-concert series, including the ever-popular Carols by Candlelight held at Townsite’s historic Dwight Hall. Tickets can be purchased from the Academy Box Office, 7280 Kemano Street or by calling 604.485.9633, and are also available online (excluding Carols by Candlelight). Readers wishing to obtain more information about the concert series and tickets can visit the academy online.
