Film generates discussion

Public invited to free screening

A free public screening of Defining Diversity, Creating Community will take place on Friday, September 7. Hosted by City of Powell River and Powell River Diversity Initiative, the screening is open to the public, who are invited to meet members of the film crew.

The film, which was produced locally by Sara Blum and directed by Tony Papa, premiered in 2011 at Powell River Film Festival and has been accepted to seven film festivals in North America, receiving two awards. Stories about Powell River are captured through a tapestry of rich and complex experiences, cultures, beliefs and lifestyles. Archival imagery is mixed with compelling interviews. Answers to questions about who Powell River is as a community and where it is heading are explored.

The film sheds light on diversity and how people from different backgrounds are accepted into the community. At the core of these stories is a reflection of how prejudice can be transformed into tolerance, then acceptance and eventually a full appreciation and celebration of difference.

Its thought-provoking nature has generated discussion in a number of communities along BC’s west coast where the film has been shown. To aid communities showing the film, the creators have put together a toolkit DVD and website, which includes the film trailer and access to educational materials.

“It’s been interesting to find out what people learn about Powell River that they’d never heard or considered before, from the many stories in the documentary,” said Michelle Hignell, diversity initiative outreach facilitator. “Although there are some difficult moments, the overall positive message of the film makes it accessible and enjoyable.”

The film will be shown from 7 to 9 pm at Evergreen Theatre, Powell River Recreation Complex. Readers wishing to attend are asked to RSVP to Janice Gunn at city hall 604.485.6291 or email [email protected].
