Folk music comes to Cranberry

Winnipeg band makes a stop in Powell River
Folk music comes to Cranberry

Just home from a European tour, the Crooked Brothers from Winnipeg will head west to play gigs and festivals on the Gulf Islands, Vancouver and a one-night stop in Powell River.

Cranberry Community Hall will host these versatile musicians, who have a range of styles from traditional old-time sound to modern folk/blues, on Wednesday, June 27. The evening will also include the talents of Jenny Ritter and Carly Dow.

The band’s bio describes its music as a blend of timeless country classic sounds, back porch blues and stomping scrapyard funk. The brothers are kindred in talent, with Jesse Matas, Darwin Baker and Matt Foster producing music that is quick to let listeners know the Crooked Brothers is not just another folk band.

Ritter is a songwriter/singer currently based in Vancouver who played and toured for the past 10 years with the Victoria folk band The Gruff. She is also the founder and director of the Kingsgate Chorus, Vancouver’s only indie-rock cover choir. In addition to her solo songwriting and performing career, she and several musical friends have formed a group called Marmota which specializes in traditional Celtic and Scandinavian music.

Dow can be heard with the Winnipeg folk trio Bog River, but is spending the spring and summer this year debuting her skills as a solo performer.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and available at Breakwater Books and Coffee or at the door. Doors open at 7 pm with performances beginning at 7:30 pm.
