For the love of music and a theatre

Benefit concert helps fundraise for the Patricia

When something as beloved to the community as Patricia Theatre hits tough times, musicians will come together to help out.

The Singers’ and Songwriters’ Benefit Concert, put on by Friends of the Historic Patricia Theatre Society’s “...for the Love of Music” series, is bringing together 18 of Powell River’s diverse musicians to help fundraise for the theatre on Sunday, April 29.

Money raised will go toward digital conversion of the theatre, which will cost $90,000. So far, $49,000 has been raised through the generosity of the community.

Ann Nelson, owner of the theatre, said it will be a gathering of musicians who want to help the theatre “because of their fondness for it.”

Geoff Allan, Joel Benson, Pat Buckna, Shaun Coburn, Gino Consentino, Sue Dixon, Evan Ehgoetz, Cris Greenwell, Devon Hanley, Sam Hurrie, Chris King, Cindy Koppen, Dan Minard, Trent Olver, Randy Pinchbeck, Nancy Tyler and Phil Williams will join forces with Nelson at 2 pm at the theatre.

Nelson said the musicians have been forming little ensembles with each other and tickets for the benefit concert have been selling well.

“At the barbecue last weekend we sold a dozen right there on the spot,” she said. “I sold another 30 or so. Powell River being Powell River, I’m sure it will end up being a last-minute decision for a lot of people. But we have offered them the convenience of advanced ticket sales if they want and expect that more tickets will be sold at the door.”

Every penny of the $10 tickets along with any other donations will go toward the conversion fund. Tickets are available at Breakwater Books and Coffee and at the door.
