Frenzy of footwork defines organists excellence

World renowned organist Edward Norman will perform on two organs at Powell River Academy of Music’s continuation of its concert series on Tuesday, October 29.

Handmade in Holland by Henk Klop, the four-and-a-half rank Baroque pipe organ and the academy’s two manual with full pedalboard Allen organ will send majestic vibrations throughout the newly renovated academy hall.

Walter Martella, trumpet, and the Academy Chamber Choir conducted by Don James will also feature in the concert. This will be James’s last concert with the chamber choir after 20 years as its conductor.

Norman is a former organist for Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. During the concert the audience will be treated to a projection on screen of Norman’s footwork as he performs one of the most challenging pieces for feet only, Organ Variations on a Theme by Paganini by George Thalben-Ball.

The program will also include organ works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Franz Liszt and the famous Toccata by Charles-Marie Widor.

The choir will perform a work by Swedish composer Egil Hovland entitled Saul for narrator, organ and choir as well as haunting folk song of Finland, a Renaissance motet Surgen Jesu and O Magnum Mysterium by Morton Lauridson.

The concert begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and free for students 18 and under with a student ticket voucher. For more information, readers can call academy box office, 7280 Kemano Street, at 604.485.9633, between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm Monday to Thursday. Tickets can also be purchased online.
