Bands perform throughout May

A new series of music will rock Carlson Community Club every Friday in May.

Headlining the first Friday Night Live all-ages concert will be The June Fiasco, a rock band out of Victoria. The band recently released a three-song debut which received lots of attention.

The June Fiasco was selected Band of the Month for March by a modern rock radio station in Victoria. Its first single, “This is Your Life,” has over 21,000 views on YouTube.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Andrew Spark reminisced in a press release about how he met 2011 Pop Album of the Year Juno award-winner and producer Jeff Johnson. “He just contacted us one day unexpectedly and asked if we would ever consider co-writing with someone,” he said. “I had never written with anyone outside my band before, but I have always been open to the idea.”

Johnson stayed with the singer in his Victoria home during the initial writing session, where Spark said, they “clicked right away. We wrote our first song together in one day. You have to be really comfortable with someone, I think, to share such a personal experience, and I felt that way with Jeff immediately.”

Punk rockers Superjuice will open for The June Fiasco on Friday, May 4. Frontrunner Ben Whittrock led the band into winning a Battle of the Bands competition in Comox last June. The band recently put together a new lineup to perform.

“We have a wicked group now with Austin Parise on drums, Chris Hummel on guitar and Rayne Muir on bass,” said Whittrock.

Doors open for Friday Night Live at 8 pm. Admission is $15 at the door. The downstairs lounge will be open to people over 19 years old.
