SHOW HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO SEPTEMBER 25, 26 and 27. REFUNDS AVAILABLE
What starts out as a classic sketch about quirky humans takes a twist, as the audience realizes it is enjoying a uniquely Canadian spy spoof.
So it is with Grounded, a Theatre Now! production of Canadian playwright John Spurway’s comedy. Nicole Narbonne directs the play which centres around five people stranded at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, delayed by bad weather and waiting for Air Canada to take them away from the dark winter.
“Hapless hero Nathan Brewer bumbles his way through a top-secret investigation, oblivious to the drama unfolding around him,” said Narbonne.
Audiences familiar with previous Theatre Now! performances will see well known local actors on stage. Tricia Andrews plays Elizabeth, a gregarious cosmetics salesperson, who attempts to engage loner accountant Brewer, played by Darrell Pearse. Tina Thompson plays a witty, accidentally-wise and surprisingly post-modern grandmother Marion. Samantha Newport and Kevin Cook play Kate and Tony, the eloping couple who find they still have a few things to work out.
“The plot zooms along on classic one-liners—with a sprinkling of double-entendres—but the truths revealed will affect them all on the rest of their journeys,” said Narbonne.
Since its inception in January 1994, Theatre Now! has maintained its community-theatre focus, seeking to involve the larger community in its activities and playing in varied sites—schools, community halls, hotels, farmer’s market, the seashore, malls, restaurants, drama festivals, street festivals as well as stages throughout Powell River.
Theatre Now! generally presents two productions each year: a family-friendly winter production, often a pantomime; and a small-cast, adult-oriented spring production. Hundreds of actors and crew from eight to 80 years of age, including people of all abilities, have taken part in productions.
Grounded lands on stage at 7:30 pm, Thursday through Saturday, May 1 to 3, at Evergreen Theatre, Powell River Recreation Complex. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors, available at the recreation complex box office, Breakwater Books, The HUB 101, Armitage Mens Wear, Paperworks Gift Gallery or at the door.
