History and food combine

Lund cookbook commemorates 125 years

A newly published book is helping to put Lund’s history into an easily digestible form.

The book is called Lund Then and Now with Recipes and includes 125 recipes to celebrate the village’s 125th birthday.

“When we moved up here my wife and I were fascinated with the history of the place,” said Roy Blackwell, co-owner of The Boardwalk Restaurant with his wife Rayana Blackwell.

Roy said that he and Rayana wanted to commemorate Lund’s birthday and also write a cookbook and the two ideas seemed to work well together.

“We’ve got a pictorial history with different aspects of Lund’s 125 years and recipes from local cooks,” he said.

Highlights from the book include a section on local ship building and the harbour, the history of Lund hotels, the old community centre and the story of the boardwalk.

“The book’s full of great recipes with a lot of seafood—Geoduck Ceviche for example,” said Roy, adding that they collected a lot of stories and recipes from community members.

Their call-out for community support was so successful that they are looking at compiling another book that focuses on the personalities in Lund’s history. The current book is more about the products and structures of the settlers. “There’s no shortage of great cooks in the area,” said Roy. “We’ll need more recipes.”

The book will be available at Lund Community Craft Fair, on November 16 at the Italian Hall, Tourism Powell River, Breakwater Books & Coffee, Coles The Book People, Paperworks Gift Gallery and at the restaurant. It goes on sale this week and costs $15. Money raised from sales will benefit Northside Volunteer Fire Department and Lund Community Society.
