iTromboni delivers trombone versatility

A quintet of outstanding Canadian trombonists will give the Max Cameron Theatre stage a blast of musical versatility on Monday, April 29.

Powell River Academy of Music has invited the musicians as part of its academy concert series.

Each of the five musicians has mastered the trombone and comes from different corners of the country. They are better known as the Team Canada of Trombones. With over 10 years of performances, they have built up a solid repertoire and reputation.

They challenge the barriers and stereotypes that have kept the trombone in the back row of the band and perform classics with an innovative twist. Their repertoire includes baroque to romantic, operatic to jazz, popular to original compositions, all carefully chosen to showcase the instruments and high quality musicianship of each artist.

The group has played to rave reviews across the country and has taken centre stage at some of Canada’s most prestigious concert venues, such as the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts in Vancouver, Edmonton’s Winspear Centre for Music, Place-des-arts in Montreal and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre.

iTromboni has worked with renowned instrumentalists including Jens Lindemann, Wycliffe Gordon, Pat Sheridan and Angèle Dubeau’s La Pietà. It has also been broadcast on television and radio.

Keeping their skills up to date, the musicians have also collaborated in commissioning Canadian music and have performed new works by Elizabeth Raum, Derek Charke, Jocelyn Morlock, Owen Underhill and Nicholas Francis. iTromboni’s CDs, There Goes the Neighbourhood and The Bad and the Beautiful, have sold thousands of copies worldwide.

Not confined to the concert hall, iTromboni is heralded by educators and students alike for its invigorating educational and outreach programs. With a knack for engaging young audiences, its fully bilingual presentations promote music appreciation, participation and discovery.

The concert begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available at the door or through the academy box office and are $22 for adults, with students 18 years and under free with a student ticket voucher.
