Mens choir performs in regional concert

A Powell River Academy of Music choir is holding a regional concert in Van Anda, Texada Island.

Chor Musica Men’s Choir will perform at the Texada Island United Church at 2 pm on Saturday, March 28.

The program features Celtic tunes, Russian folksongs, and American spirituals. Hitting closer to home are audience favourites Hunker Down, telling the tale of an impending storm composed by Powell Riverite Tobin Stokes, and Royal Hudson, a ride along the BC coastline on the famous engine #2850 written by Nanaimo’s David Baker. Time-honoured pieces include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Ave Verum” and “Ave Maria” ascribed to Giulio Caccini, as well as some fun selections and solo performances to round out the afternoon.

Tickets are $20. Readers wishing to obtain more information can visit powellriveracademy.org. Tickets can be purchased at the Texada United Church, the Ravenous Raven, and at the door by cash or cheque.

Chor Musica is a male voice community choir comprised of 40 singers. Formed in 1998, the choir provides an opportunity for men to explore and perform a variety of music written for the male choir. In its short history the choir has become popular with audiences of all ages. In 2007, the choir performed at the third International Male Voice Festival in Cornwall, England and in 2013 performed concerts in the Yucatan, Mexico.

The choir is heading to England this April for the 2015 Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival, in which more than 70 male choirs from around the world will participate. The men are honoured to have been invited to sing in the opening ceremonies of this prestigious event. The touring choir is pleased to present a pre-tour concert at 7:30 pm on Monday, April 20, at James Hall, with admittance by donation.

Chor Musica Men’s Choir is conducted by Walter Martella with the assistance of Richard Olfert on piano.
