Performer revisits Man in Black

Tribute act to explore history and music of Johnny Cash
Performer revisits Man in Black

“Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” Sort of.

Fans of the Man in Black are no longer able to see the famous American singer who broke lines between rock and country, but thanks to the eerily similar voice of Gary Kehoe they’ll have the

chance to see the next best thing.

Kehoe is coming to Evergreen Theatre at Powell River Recreation Complex on Wednesday, November 2 with his show Johnny Cash: A Live Musical Documentary. Kehoe is a well-known Cash tribute performer.

This performance incorporates Kehoe’s covers of Cash’s most popular tunes such as Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues and Get Rhythm along with stories, jokes and multimedia that help Kehoe tell the story of the man himself. Cash’s life provided the material for the Oscar-winning movie Walk the Line and with Kehoe’s show audiences are able to see that story brought to life before them.

Growing up in the Okanagan Valley, Kehoe felt drawn to the music of Cash after his first listen. He said that, as for many, it was Cash’s deep baritone voice that caught and held his attention.

“Johnny was at once recognizable and different from most other country artists,” said Kehoe in a press release. “Also, his songs were earthier than most others. While the vast majority of songs had love as the theme, Johnny’s songs were often about work, prison, hardships, real life and history.”

Kehoe has long been writing music and performing, both with his own material and with the material of the country stars he impersonates. He also records his own music and is currently working on his sixth album.

Tickets for the show are $20 and are available at the Evergreen Theatre box office. The show starts at 7 pm. For more information, interested readers can call 604.836.1466.
