Pianist brings classics to academy en route to Carnegie Hall

Ranked among the top 30 pianists in the world by the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Ang Li brings youth, talent, personality and audience appeal to each performance, truly making her one of the world’s rising classical piano stars. She performs as part of Powell River Academy of Music’s concert series on Friday, October 7 at Academy Hall.

Li has appeared at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Ruïnekerk in Bergen, the Netherlands, and National Center for the Performing Arts in China among others.

In 2007, Li was invited by China’s performing arts center to replace pianist Yundi Li in the performance of Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major with China National Symphony Orchestra. She was immediately re-engaged to perform at the same venue with Beijing Symphony Orchestra in 2008. Her appearances with many of the world’s symphony orchestras speaks to her extensive repertoire range from early Baroque to contemporary piano music.

Hailed as “a potential figure of huge significance on the international concert stage” by the Star-Telegram and “a revelation” by La Press Montréal, Li made her first public appearance at the Beijing Concert Hall at age six. At age 13, she made her orchestral debut with The Little Orchestra Society of New York at Avery Fisher Hall. Mid-December, Li performs at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The concert begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $22 available in advance at academy box office, 7280 Kemano Street or by calling 604.485.9633, and at the door. Students 18 and under are free.
