Piano trio to perform as part of series

One of the world’s preeminent piano trios will perform at Powell River Academy of Music’s academy hall, Monday, February 4 as part of the academy’s concert series.

Having impressed international audiences and the press with its performances at Festival Vancouver, the Juno-award winning Gryphon Trio has firmly established itself as Canada’s national treasure.

The trio’s repertoire ranges from traditional to contemporary and from European classicism to modern-day multimedia. It is also committed to redefining chamber music for the 21st century.

Gryphon cellist Roman Borys is in his fourth season as artistic director of Ottawa International Chamber Music Society’s Chamberfest, the largest festival of chamber music in North America, where the trio has been a mainstay since the festival’s inception in 1994. Annalee Patipatanakoon on violin and Jamie Parker on piano serve as artistic advisors to the society.

The trio’s 15 celebrated recordings are an encyclopedia of works by well-known composers. Its most recent recording of piano trios by Ludwig van Beethoven was acknowledged with a 2011 Juno Award in the best classical album category. This was the trio’s second Juno, having previously won in 2004.

Deeply committed to the education of the next generations of audiences and performers alike, the trio takes time out of its busy touring schedule to conduct masterclasses and workshops at universities and conservatories across North America.

The concert begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $22 for adults, with students 18 years and under admitted free with a student ticket. Tickets are available at the academy box office, online or at the door 30 minutes before the concert.
