Internationally acclaimed Chinese pianist Ang Li returns to Powell River Academy of Music on October 1, and this time she will be tackling its nine-foot Steinway concert grand piano.
“Nothing is comparable to the Steinway’s palette of colours, richness of sound, warmth and personality,” said Li in a press release. “I feel most at home with the Steinway piano. My experiences with Steinway pianos have been extraordinary and memorable.”
Only about 300 of the pianos are available in the world. When one finally came available for public sale, Powell River’s academy was among the first to make a purchase.
For this performance, Li will play a Phillip Glass piece entitled Mad Rush. Also, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Russian composer Alexander Scriabin’s death, Li has chosen four preludes from Opus 11. Work by Chopin, Debussy and Schubert will round out the program.
Li’s previous Powell River concert was in 2012 and featured a BC premier of American composer Jared Miller’s piano piece, Souvenirs d’Europe.
Her latest performance takes place at the James Hall and opens Powell River Academy of Music’s 2015/16 concert series. For more information and tickets, readers can go to powellriveracademy.org.
