Poet finds muse at home

Collaboration results in locally printed and designed release

A Powell River poet, Hannah Main-van der Kamp, and book designer-printer, Stuart Isto, have released a limited edition, signed and numbered chapbook of poetry, Bright at Black Point.

Main-van der Kamp has been a seasonal resident in Powell River for 20 years. She recently moved her permanent residence to Black Point.

Isto is a printer and book artist who has lived in Powell River for six years. He has a printing and bookbinding studio on Cranberry Lake. He has offered several courses in bookbinding and book repair in Powell River in recent years.

Bright at Black Point is a collection of short pieces about the weather, people, birds and light at Black Point. It is published by Arkwalk Press, a poetry-publishing cooperative.

Main-van der Kamp is a freelance editor, reviewer columnist and teacher. Her work has been published in numerous books, anthologies and heard on CBC Radio. “I fell for Black Point the first day there, 20 years ago,” she said. “I’ve been walking Donkersley Beach ever since. From the beach, the west lies behind Black Point so that at sunset colours of the sky are seen behind the shape of the point. The title I chose for this collection is both literal and metaphorical,” she added. “There’s a lot going on here and in the world that appears to be quite dark, yet there is also this transcendent light.”

Half of the books have been pre-sold prior to publication date. A few copies will be available at Powell River Writers Conference, April 15 and 16, where Main-van der Kamp is giving a writing workshop.
