Poetic journeys

Prolific poet and expert kayaker read from their collections

Enchanted by a walk through woods in 1958, local author Allan Brown wrote a poem about the blackberries he encountered. “Or maybe they wrote a poem for me,” he said. Blackberries, a selection of haiku, is the title of Brown’s 23rd volume of poetry.

Ursula Vaira, of Lantzville, BC, draws from her experience on “three transformative journeys in British Columbia’s wilderness,” as an expert kayaker. Her three-sequence book, And See What Happens: The Journey Poems, is published by Caitlin Press. The title piece of her book was a finalist in the CBC Literary Competition.

Vaira is the founder of Leaf Press, a publishing company that produced Brown’s book, which is part of a series of chapbooks. Together, Brown and Vaira will read from their new poetry collections at 7 pm, Thursday, June 2 at Breakwater Books and Coffee.
