Poets spit fire over championship

Spoken word competitors do battle

All poets with a delight in competition are called to the Poetic Smackdown, Saturday, May 17.

Cranberry Community Hall will be alive with artists vying for SLAM champion status. SLAM is a spoken word competition where the brave, bright and loud climb on stage to share their words in front of a hollering, cheering, supportive crowd.

The reigning word warrior is selected by the end of the night, immortalized in name on the one and only “SLAM CHAMP” medallion.

Powell River Public Library has joined with Cranberry Community Hall Association to bring the frivolity back for audiences. Organizers are looking for participants of all ages and all skill levels. For those who are not comfortable with competing, an open mic will be available for poets to share their craft after the champion has been crowned.

For the audience, a SLAM is carried out in a series of rounds. The number of rounds depends upon the number of participants. A maximum of 12 poets can take part. Performers need to have at least three poems ready that are under three minutes each.

Anyone wishing to participate can sign up by emailing [email protected] or at the event between 6:15 and 6:45 pm. Doors will open to the audience at 6:30 pm and the event will begin at 7 pm. Admission is by a suggested donation of $5 and most of the door collection will be divided among the top three poets at the end of the night. Cranberry Community Hall is located at 6826 Cranberry Street.
