An award-winning comedian is coming to Powell River to delight audiences and chase away the mid-winter blues.
Vancouver comic Roman Danylo will perform at Max Cameron Theatre with Diane Frances for his Live Tour, which he considers to his “best of” show.
“There’s nothing better than performing in small towns,” said Danylo, who remembers Powell River as one of his first out-of-own gigs 20 years ago. “It’s a beautiful place and it got me thinking that this is a pretty great job.”
Danylo said he likes to include a lot of local references in his stand-up act.
“We usually pick them up in the cab coming from the airport,” he said. “Every town’s got a seedy bar and rivalry with a neighbouring town.”
He said he’s looking forward to bringing his act to Powell River because comics tend to be more relaxed in smaller venues. “It makes it more fun for sure,” he said. “It makes the shows better as well because you don’t really realize it’s when comedians are in high-pressure situations that they get kind of tight. That makes the performance a little watered down. So when you come to a venue where you know that it’s going to be a good time, you just start to loosen up a bit. It’s always a better show. It works out better for everyone.”
Danylo’s performances are award-wining and he has appeared in several Canadian television series including Corner Gas, Just for Laughs and Made in Canada. For five seasons Danylo starred in a sketch comedy series on CTV and Spike TV called Comedy Inc. In 2004 Danylo won a Leo Award and he has been nominated twice for a Gemini award.
Danylo is bringing Frances with him. He and Frances toured Canada together last November as part of the Just For Laughs tour. The second half of the act will be his improv jam with Frances.
“I’m often getting people up on stage, or crawling out into the crowd, or at least taking audience suggestions,” he said. “There’s nothing better than that. It always gets the biggest laughs.”
Danylo’s show starts at 7:30 pm on Thursday, February 7. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and youth, available at Powell River Academy of Music box office, Breakwater Books and Coffee on Alberni Street and at the theatre on the day of the performance.
