Roots at the heart of foot-stomping music

Band promises high energy show
Kyle Wells

Playing for the first time ever in Powell River as a full band, The Breakmen are bringing their take on folkish, Canadiana music to McKinney’s Pub on Saturday, February 4.

Harkening back to such Canadian greats as The Band, Blue Rodeo and Neil Young, The Breakmen are modern practitioners of a great tradition of Canadian songwriters and musicians. Not only that, but the members of The Breakmen couldn’t have met in a more quintessentially Canadian way. They formed in 2005 after spending time together while tree planting and jamming in camp. Now with three albums to their name The Breakmen are building a following in BC and beyond.

Chief songwriters Archie Pateman and Lee Watson teamed up with bassist Matthew Lawson and then added Ben Rogalsky to the mix to form the lean four-man band. Since then the band won the 2009 Americana Album of the Year award at the Independent Music Awards and has been nominated for two Canadian folk music awards for the album When You Leave Town.

“With a new approach to songwriting and an effort to create something lasting,” reads a press release, “The Breakmen are ploughing new and fertile ground in the dry and dusty fields of the Canadian folk music scene.”

Pateman describes their sound as a “five-piece roots, Americana, alt-country sort of act” that translates well to a live show that will get people up and dancing. He said to expect tight harmonies, high energy and warm tones that are sure to raise the energy in the room.

“We’re super happy to be coming to Powell River,” said Pateman. “We’re really looking forward to it.”

Music starts at 9 pm, cover is $10. For more information on the band interested readers can visit its website.
