Show features masks made from trash

Artists incorporate found objects and recycled material

Malaspina Art Society is launching a group show that features masks which incorporate trash, including found objects and recycled material.

The show, Trash Mask, features a number of well-known Powell River artists and includes contributions from businesses and community groups. The opening is being held from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, October 6, at Malaspina Exhibition Centre, located in the foyer of Vancouver Island University, Powell River campus. Refreshments will be served.

Interest in the show has been high, said Caitlin Richardson-Bryant, the society’s curator. Lenora Sattmann, president of the society, has been wanting to do a group show that is open to the community and which incorporates recycled materials for a while, Richardson-Bryant said.

Some of the masks will be on sale, while others will be shown as private works. “We have four submissions from children,” Richardson-Bryant said. “That’s really neat. There are a lot of Powell River artists and a lot of people who you don’t often see submitting as well.”

The masks will be on display at the exhibition centre from 8 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday, until Tuesday, November 8. The campus is located at 100-7085 Nootka Street.
