Lifting paint to canvas while standing or sitting outside, and slowing down to capture nature onto two dimensions, has long been a popular activity for artists.
Painting en plein air developed in the mid-19th century and has become increasingly popular. Today, a blanket organization, International Plein Air Painters (IPAP), draws individual groups of artists together for the sole purpose of advancing the execution and enjoyment of plein air painting without limitations of borders or regions.
On Saturday, September 12, Texada Island will stage Texada Paint Out 2015, part of the 14th Worldwide Paint Out hosted by IPAP.
The fun takes place at Shingle Beach 10 am and throughout the day. Artists will set up and paint while enduring the elements. Then, on Sunday, September 13, the paintings will be on display from 11 am at the Texada Arts, Culture and Tourism (TACT) Society centre in Van Anda. From 11 am to 2 pm there will be an opportunity to speak with the artists at the centre at an artists’ reception.
Plein air artists seek the quality of natural light and atmosphere outdoors using a variety of media, from oils, through watercolours, line drawing and pastels, so there will be a wide variety of work being created and on display.
Event organizer Marilyn Timms said there is a joy about painting outdoors and this is a chance for people to see artists at work, developing their paintings in response to the beauty in nature.
Any artist wishing to take part in Texada Paint Out needs to pre-register with Timms at 604.486.6907 or by email [email protected].
