Texada Island thespians perform play by Norm Foster

Audience members will be taken on an emotional roller-coaster ride while watching Texada Island’s Rock Island Players present Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun by Canadian playwright Norm Foster starting Thursday, May 24.

Described as a “wonderfully sad and beautifully happy” play and “a perfect blend of comedy and drama,” Kiss the Moon follows an unlikely friendship between Robert, a man with mental disabilities, and Holly, a young woman in the crisis of an unexpected pregnancy and broken relationship. It’s a story about love in an unconventional form and about people finding the nerve to take responsibility and persevering against the odds.

Foster is Canada’s most popular playwright and has more than 150 productions on stage across North America this year alone. Local audiences may remember Rock Island Players’ popular production of his play Opening Night which resulted in sold-out performances last April. Foster states: “It’s the stories that touch an audience’s heart as well as its funny bone that are the most rewarding.”

Rock Island Players was originally formed in the early 1960s and offered community theatre to Texada’s growing population. The company was revived in 1992 and has involved dozens of islanders in all aspects of theatre production in the 20 years since.

Kiss the Moon will be performed at 7 pm starting Thursday, May 24 through Saturday, May 26, at Texada Island Community Hall in Gillies Bay. Doors open at 6:30 pm. People travelling from Powell River can take the 5:40 pm ferry from Westview terminal and catch the 10:10 pm ferry back home. Tickets for the play are available at the door and cost $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students. Audience members should be aware the play includes some adult content.
