Youth shine in musical event

Competition nurtures talent and builds friendships

Eager, inspiring and talented youth will take to the stage at Evergreen Theatre, Powell River Recreation Complex, and give it their all on Saturday, February 11 for Powell River Idol.

With a new coordinator and some unique dynamics, the ninth annual event promises to be something different from past shows, but with all the talent and great music audiences have come to expect.

Renelle Wikene, a local musician, has moved in as the new coordinator of the show. She has been working with the youth for over a month.

Contestants range from ages 13 to 17 and this year feature more males than in the past. Seven girls and four boys will perform in group numbers and solo efforts to win the audience and judges over and be declared 2012’s Powell River Idol.

The show promises performances revolving around a wide array of musical styles and well-known songs. Participants pick their own music to perform, so Wikene said that will make things interesting.

“The kids are really drawing a unique blend of music genres,” said Wikene. “Everything from classics that people know the words to, to stuff they’re used to hearing on the radio. It’s kind of a neat mix.”

This year, because so many boys are taking part, the show will also feature all-female and all-male group performances. Organizers were tight-lipped on the music for the evening but one did let slip that as a group the males would be performing Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back in Town.”

A rewarding part of organizing the show, for Wikene, is watching the kinship that develops between participants. She said they are constantly supporting one another and giving each other advice and generally forming into a tight group.

“Some of them are very, very shy kids so this is a huge step,” said Wikene. “To have the opportunity to bring forth some of my knowledge and work with the youth has been a fantastic experience for me. It’s been really, really fun.”

First Credit Union is sponsoring the first place prize for the show, Peak Publishing is presenting the second place prize and Powell River Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the People’s Choice Award.

The show begins at 7 pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children 12 and under or $40 for a family pass, available at the chamber, Taw’s Cycle and Sports, Rockit Music and at the complex.
