Agency mails ballots

BC Elections sends packages despite escalating postal service disruption

HST referendum voting packages are being mailed to Powell River residents. Powell River-Sunshine Coast is one of 38 electoral districts to begin receiving the packages, which contain mail-in ballots for the referendum.

Elections BC started mailing roughly three million packages on Monday, June 13, despite expanding Canada Post service disruption. The same day, Canadian Union of Postal Workers’ job action struck Nanaimo, along with nine other locations across Canada. Canada Post also rolled out service reductions, cutting mail delivery to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Elections BC is mailing out HST ballots over the next two weeks. They must be returned to the agency by July 22 in order to be counted.

The packages are being sent first to voters in the North, the Interior and the islands between June 13 and 17. Voting packages will be delivered to the rest of the province between June 20 and 24.

Voters who do not receive a voting package by June 24 may call Elections BC at 1.800.661.8683 to register to vote or update their voter record and request an HST referendum voting package. The deadline to request a voting package is midnight, July 8.

British Columbian voters are being asked a yes or no question regarding the HST. They will vote yes to scrap the tax and return to the GST and PST or no to keep it.
