Agreements between local governments are online

Collaboration here seen as good example

City of Powell River is a leader in disseminating information regarding first nations agreements.

At the Tuesday, June 2, committee of the whole meeting, council members reviewed correspondence from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), requesting permission from the city to post copies to its website of agreements between the city and Tla’amin (Sliammon) Nation.

Mac Fraser, chief administrative officer, said the FCM has a program that promotes local governments working with first nations.

“We are seen as an example for others to learn from; we being the city, the regional district and Sliammon,” Fraser said. “Service agreements are posted for the information of others. It’s public information and a courtesy.”

Peigi Wilson, program manager from the FCM First Nations - Municipal Community Infrastructure Partnership Program, stated in her letter: “Your agreements provide excellent examples for other first nations and municipalities that are working to develop their own joint service agreements. We would be delighted if we could post the agreements to our website.”

The request was referred to city council.
