This year the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) in Powell River is having its annual White Ribbon Against Pornography campaign during the week of October 20 to 26.
City of Powell River Mayor Dave Formosa proclaimed the week at the October 17 council meeting, calling on all residents to wear and display a white ribbon “as a sign of their commitment to the community standards of decency and their support of the enforcement of the laws against obscene materials.”
White Ribbons Against Pornography (WRAP)/Pornography Hurts is part of an international education effort, explained Bonnie Johanson, communication convener for the league. “We use the white ribbons to raise awareness about pornography and how pornography has such corrupting effects on society,” she said. “Over the years, a little white ribbon has become a symbol of decency. The annual fall campaign is an opportunity for action, to fight for wholesome family values. It presents us with an opportunity to rally for safe communities and therefore a stronger country.”
CWL members will be distributing white ribbons after all mass services during the week.
The CWL has an ongoing campaign wherein each province has a month they send in a postcard stating the fact that 2.5 billion pornographic emails are sent daily. BC will send its postcards and mail during December to Justice Minister Peter MacKay, House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6.
