Archaeologist takes a dig at journalism

Mel Edgar, a recent graduate of the Langara College journalism program, has joined the staff of Peak Publishing for the summer.

As a former professional archaeologist, she freely admits that she’s “always been one to dig around for a story.”

Edgar is a self-professed “quirky person” who might admit, if asked nicely, what her PhD thesis was about. She hopes to travel to Egypt on purpose one day, and is learning to play the Star Wars anthem on her ukulele.

In journalism as in archaeology Edgar said, “My experiences digging all over the world drive me to search out stories that connect and resonate with people.”

From discovering ancient Roman kilns in England, to digging in Northern BC, she said she couldn’t think of a better place to spend the summer than amid the beautiful beaches, forests and people of Powell River.

“Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming,” said Edgar. “I look forward to living in, and reporting for, such a vibrant community.”
