Board begins chief librarian search

Kregel to retire after nearly six years of service

A search is underway for someone to step in as chief librarian at Powell River Public Library.

Charlie Kregel, chief librarian, has indicated that he will retire after heading up the library for the past five-and-a-half years.

“We have accomplished so many things and we will miss his dedication, creativity and hard work,” said Jon van Oostveen, library board chair. “With Charlie’s direction the staff strategically transformed Powell River’s library service into the nationally recognized award-winning operation that it is today.”

Kregel has worked to revitalize collections, revamp policies and procedures and offer the community a wide variety of activities and services, said van Oostveen. “The board has been exceptionally prudent with taxpayer support,” he added, and receives only 3.4 per cent more now than it did five years ago.

“The library has become a centre of cultural activity and learning,” said van Oostveen. “Not a week goes by without some innovative event or program happening.”

Van Oostveen said the board is starting its search for a replacement for chief librarian and Kregel will assist in the hiring process to ensure a smooth transition occurs.

The Peak contacted Kregel but he declined comment on his decision.
