Boarders regulate selves

Boarders using city streets appear to be doing a good job of self-regulation.

Boarders using city streets appear to be doing a good job of self-regulation.

At the Thursday, September 4, City of Powell River Council meeting, council unanimously passed the first three readings of the Skateboards, In-Line Skates and Scooters Control Bylaw 2014. Discussion prior to the adoption of the motion indicated that some of the problems that led to the drafting of the bylaw do not appear to be significant at this time.

None of the councillors or staff had heard any further concerns expressed by residents in the Fairmont Street area or by boarders themselves. Mac Fraser, chief administrative officer, said the only correspondence of note was a letter to the editor published in the Powell River Peak, thanking council for the gathering at city hall to explain the bylaw. He said the letter commented on how productive it was get the youth and residents together.

Mayor Dave Formosa said an RCMP member was in attendance, plus some members of council and himself.

Councillor Jim Palm said it goes to show that communication goes a long way.

“I think they understand the bylaw and why it needs to be there,” said Councillor Maggie Hathaway. “They are making a great effort to self-regulate. Kudos to them.”
