Book of condolences available at city hall

A condolence book for Jim Flaherty is available for signing at city hall on Duncan Street, April 14 to 25.

The former federal finance minister died suddenly Thursday at his home in Ottawa.

“Jim Flaherty’s death hit me hard, just as it did others,” said John Weston, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country. “As minister of finance for eight years, he was a classy member of Canada’s government during difficult economic times.”

Tributes from across the country and around the world have been pouring in since his death at age 64. “The outpouring of grief and affection is a strong reminder of what Canadians really crave from our politicians,” said Weston, “people who approach the policies and votes of the day with sensitivity, courage, intelligence and compassion.”

Weston said he was grateful that within three months of his election, Flaherty accepted an invitation to visit this riding where he was part of the biggest town hall Weston has witnessed. His personal appeal, his important role as finance minister and the uncertain times, attracted 450 to the event. “I sat beside him, and in characteristic form, he listened intently to each of the 70 speakers, taking copious notes,” Weston said. “He went out of his way to find good things to say, even about those who disagreed with him.”

Weston added that Flaherty was a testament to the dividend that comes from a good education. “In having a strong liberal arts background and legal education, he was trained to understand the value of other people’s perspectives.”

Flaherty left great memories of what is possible even in the sometimes nasty nature of partisan politics, according to Weston. “By his strong character and positive attitude, he inspired me and many others in a true commitment to service. I will miss him as a mentor, a friend and great leader.”
