Fire ban lifted

Fire threat specialists with BC’s Wildfire Management Branch have decided to lift the fire ban in areas around the coastal fire region.

The ban on campfires had been in place since the beginning of August.

Cooler temperatures and recent rain have lowered the fire risk within the areas in the coastal fire region. Officials lifted the ban August 20 for areas around Powell River and Lund on the mainland and on Texada and Harwood islands. However, the ban on open fires, including campfires, is still in place on Savary Island.

Category three open fires with registered burn numbers will also be permitted.

The ban also remains in place for areas south of Hotham Sound on Jervis Inlet and north of Mount Alfred. It also will remain for Lasqueti, Denman, Hornby and Nelson islands.

“We had to draw a line where we saw the fire danger ratings had gone into moderate or lower and were no longer much of a concern,” said Marg Drysdale fire information officer for the Coastal Fire Centre.

The areas where the ban is being maintained may see it lifted if there is significant rain this weekend.

“At this time of year we’re constantly looking at [fire risk levels] because we don’t like to keep campfire bans on longer than we absolutely have to,” added Drysdale.
