Adrenaline, determination and the element of surprise. For the last two years Powell River Villa added those three components to a skilled side and narrowly missed qualifying for the Jackson Cup final.

The players had Gordon Head on the ropes 3-0 late in their game two years ago but let the lead slip to lose 4-3, and then last year ran into a buzz saw losing 4-0 against eventual BMO Bank of Montreal finalist Gorge FC.

Villa starts its 2011 Jackson Cup campaign with a game against Division One’s Sooke Celtic, a mid-level team sporting a record of 8-6-1.

Coach Jamie Zroback said it will be hard to beat the excitement of the previous two years but Villa’s priority this year is building a solid Vancouver Island Soccer League division two club.

“Our focus is on our standing in the league this year,” he said, “but we’ve been successful the last couple of years so I know our guys will be up for the game. They have expectations within themselves to try to beat Sooke and I think we can.”

It was hoped that Villa could try to duplicate the success it had against Vic West last week with a change of venue.

“We had a really good performance on the Brook’s turf Saturday night against a fast, skilled team,” explained Zroback.

Unfortunately Brooks Secondary School athletic field was booked for the time slot so the game will go ahead as scheduled at 1:30 pm Sunday, February 13 at Cranberry Field.

Art show

Art will fill the Powell River Recreation Complex during Powell River’s 10th annual Film Festival, and not just on the screen.

Over 70 works of art from 26 local artists will be on display in the upper foyer during the festival as members from Malaspina Arts Society come together to show their best works. This mass art show features the collective works of society members who were able to take part and is a rare opportunity to see so many artists’ works displayed in one location. There will be artists and volunteers on hand to show guests around and discuss the works.

“Everyone who answered the artists’ call will have their day in the public eye,” said coordinator Rianne Matz. “This is only the tip of the artistic iceberg here in Powell River and we are looking forward to hosting many more shows in the future.”

The artwork will be in the upper foyer of the complex starting at noon each day from Thursday, February 17 through to Saturday, February 19.
