RCMP are conducting an increased number of road blocks this summer to keep drivers, impaired by drugs and alcohol, off the roads.
“With lots of motorists out enjoying the weather, we need to ensure that all road users are safe this summer,” said Constable Chris Bakker of Powell River RCMP.
Police are able to issue three-, seven- and 30-day driving prohibitions for those who provide a breath sample that registers between 0.05 and 0.08 per cent alcohol, and a 90-day driving prohibition for those who are over the legal limit of 0.08 per cent.
In the first year it was implemented, the impaired driving legislation cut alcohol-related deaths on BC roads by 40 per cent. Over the same time period, road deaths linked to all forms of impairment, including drugs, fell 45 per cent.
“If you are drinking, please don’t drive,” said Bakker. “Call a cab, have a designated driver or walk home if you have to.”
